Springer Creek Forest Products Ltd. believes in conducting its business in a manner that protects the environment. Springer Creek and its employees take pride in managing our operations and our timberlands within a framework of sustainability, safety and industry leading standards.
As a new company, Springer Creek is reviewing its environmental policies to confirm and formalize its environmental commitment. We will soon be completing an EMS registration of our timberlands to leading national and international certification standards.
We are committed to a process that continually improves our activities involving environmental performance and stewardship.
To achieve this we must:
- Manage our operation to comply with or exceed all legal requirements.
- Identify, evaluate and control potential environmental risks, and implement appropriate preventive measures
- Set and review environmental objectives that continually improve environmental performance
- Communicate, educate and promote awareness regarding environmental activities with employees and stakeholders
- Conduct timely audits of our environmental management systems and implement corrective measures as required
Springer Creek Forest Products ensures the sustainability of the forest resources through prompt and aggressive reforestation programs.
Post harvested blocks are assessed and site preparation treatments are prescribed to produce optimum growing conditions. For example, on high elevation blocks where cold soils are a limiting factor to seedling growth, small raised mounds are created on which seedlings are planted. These raised micro-sites enable soils to reach and maintain required growing temperature for extended periods.
Tree species are selected for reforestation based on many different objectives and sustainability factors including commercial, wildlife, forest health, visual and/or ecological values. Mixed species are planted for biological diversity and natural regeneration usually supplements the species diversity.
When seedlings are in direct competition for light, moisture and nutrients with non-commercial herbaceous and deciduous vegetation, brushing treatments are prescribed. By selectively eliminating this direct competition, both tree growth and quality is substantially enhanced.
Regular surveys and assessments are conducted to monitor tree growth and measure our reforestation program’s effectiveness. Adjustments in our practices are continual as we learn from our successes and challenges in producing a free growing forest.
The success of our efforts within Springer Creek Forest Products is dependant on sustaining a healthy environment.
